Nearly 400 Salem County, N.J. (U.S.), students have toured the DuPont Chambers Works in Deepwater, N.J., in recent weeks as part of a mentoring grant provided by the DuPont Community Fund. The focus of these tours was to offer local students a “real-world” experience in the area of scientific research. In addition to a bus tour of the facility, students participated in a walking tour of several working laboratories, as well as a presentation on the history of DuPont and Chambers Works.

During the tour, the students learned about several of DuPont’s scientific breakthroughs and how sustainable technologies positively impact people’s lives through the production of useful chemical products.

These chemicals are the key ingredients in many items used in everyday life.“We are pleased to have the opportunity to show local students some of the amazing things we accomplish through science here at Chambers Works,” said Mike Ashworth, a DuPont Chambers Works unit manager and one of the coordinators taking part in the educational program.

Alicia Busillo’s fourth grade class from Penn Beach School in Pennsville was one of the groups participating in the Chambers Works visit.

According to Busillo, her students were very interested in learning about products and career opportunities. “The staff was great and answered all of the students’ questions,” she said.Since 1988, DuPont Chambers Works and Salem Community College have collaborated with Salem County schools through the DuPont Partners in Science Program.

The Partners in Science Program and the DuPont Community Fund also sponsor the DuPont Salem County Science Fair and the DuPont Academic League Competition among county high schools.
